Attention all High Schools : top tertiary design schools are coming to the Open Design Cape Town Festival to be part of our popular Designing Careers event in August, to talk you through their study options and why you should consider an exciting career in the Creative Industry.

On Tuesday 15 August over 10 design schools, including the famous IED Istituto Europeo di Design Spa that will represent all 11 campuses from Italy, Spain and Brazil, the Greenside Design Centre from Johannesburg and the following schools from Cape Town will participate in the design education showcase at the main auditorium, Cape Town City Hall on Darling Street:

The daylong event is free for Grade 9 to 12 learners, but be sure to book seats.

Local design icons will also be giving talks on the day.

Learners will get to hear from internationally acclaimed SA architect Luyanda Mpahlwa of Cape Town-based firm Design Space Africa. Mpahlwa has designed the South African Embassy in Berlin, Germany, as well as the 10×10 low cost housing project in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, among other major projects.

Local designer Haldane Martin will also be giving a talk. He is the creator of the iconic Songololo Sofa with its multitude of legs, and the Zulu Mama Cafe Chair, which incorporates a seat based on indigenous Zulu basket-weaving design.

The event will also include a movie hour, and students and educators will be able to get something to eat at the festival’s food quarter.

Times and Dates

Designing Careers takes place in the Auditorium at City Hall on Tuesday 15 August, from 10h00 to 16h00. Entrance is free to learners in Grades 9 – 12, however, bookings for schools and educators is essential.
