Samuel Quartey lives in Accra in Ghana. He has practiced and taught animation for nearly 30 years. He was head of the animation programme at the National Film and Television Institute, Ghana until 2008. Educated at National Film and Television, Ghana and the Bournemouth University, UK. Samuel was a member of the Pedagogical Committee of Animated Africa, UNESCO Animation Production Workshop, Kenya (2004) In 2005, he founded Animation Africa, an animation consultancy promoting African folklore through animation running workshops and events in Universities and art Colleges in Ghana and the in West African region. The initiative led to workshops with Toon boom (Canada) and TV Paint (France) Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Concordia University, University of Trinidad and Tobago, Ecole des Metiers du cinema d’animation D’Angouleme, France. Samuel is President of the Animators Association of Ghana, a Board Member of the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Art. (GAFTA) and founding director of Animafrik a festival dedicated to the promotion of African and Caribbean animation. In the last five years Samuel has been working on short animation series on African and Caribbean folklore and currently directing an animated film, 28th the Crossroads, a co production with Parables studios due for release in March 2021.
