Thursday 11 August is a busy one at the Open Design Festival. It starts with Creative Mornings, moves on to Talk100 and ends with the African premiere of the crowd-funding documentary Capital C, hosted at the Labia Theatre and supported by Thundafund. Talk100 is a flagship Open Design Festival event. The programme this year brings together business leaders, social entrepreneurs and tech experts who are driving change in their world. Here’s a brief introduction to the speakers.

Dominic is a strategic advisor, systems and design thinker who works with organisations and governments in the health, economic development and other diverse sectors to shape better futures.
SESSION ONE:
The Steve Jobs factor: what qualities do we need in future business leaders?

Speakers:
Kuridas Tshintsholo: co-founder and Executive Director of Moneytree Group, and co-founder and Managing Director of South African Textiles, both companies focused on promoting and supporting young entrepreneurs.
Ian Calvert: Project Leader at Red Bull Amaphiko.Originated in South Africa, Red Bull Amaphiko is an international programme aimed at giving wings to social entrepreneurs who are using their talents and creativity to make a difference in their communities, and inspiring a broader audience to do the same.
SESSION TWO:
Are we ready for the fourth industrial revolution?

Speakers:
Robyn Farah: Founder of KAT-O and TECHTalk, and tech activist with Arduino Cape Town, Modern Alchemists and Women in Tech Cape Town, Robyn is focused on using technology to create a better Africa.
Lars Espeter: game developer, augmented and virtual reality fan and leader of the Game Graphics and Multimedia Entertainment course at Friends of Design. Lars is driving game development and the use of game technology to create jobs and help others build careers in the gaming sector in South Africa.
Alan Ball: drone pilot and founder of Flying Robot. As a dedicated fan of first-person view technology, Alan is determined to help others discover a love for drones by making the parts and components more accessible than ever in South Africa.
SESSION THREE:
It takes a village to raise a child. What does it take to build a community?

Speakers:
Arianna Mazzeo: Head of Research and Professor of Creative Arts at Bath Spa UK University-Esart Campus ad Design and Innovation Professor at Elisava Design School, Barcelona. She is co-ordinating the first European Open Design School based on open culture values, collaboration and digital fabrication, and new emerging business models for open innovation research.
India Baird: founder of Rock Girl, joined by young women from Rock Girl BRAVE and SST Khayelitsha. Rock Girl has adopted an innovative approach to creating safe spaces for girls in crime-ridden communities, collaborating with artists and designers, travel, conservation and tourism organisations and government to improve the lives of girls and women across Africa.
Luthando Dyasi: co-founder and leader of Dine with Khayelitsha. Luthando was a former winner of Innovate the Cape, through which he developed the GoVarsity app, which provides mentorship for learners on how to apply to, and what to expect at university.
SESSION FOUR:
Is health the new wealth for our cities?

Speakers:
Lufefe Nomjana: Founder and CEO of Espinaca Bakery in Khayelitsha, also known as the Spinach King. Lufefe’s company, Espinaca Innovations is starting a health revolution selling well-priced healthy food in Cape Town’s townships.
Ryan Roberts: Product designer and founder of Deskstand™. As a designer, Ryan’s philosophy is “if the right design doesn’t already exist, make it yourself.” In his case, this meant designing a desk that would counteract the effects of sitting down for hours at a time, offering desk-workers all over the world a chance to stay healthy at work.
