The purpose of this master class is to create awareness on resource constraint issues that the world is facing today and how tools like Industrial Symbiosis (IS) can improve resource efficiency by ensuring that the maximum value is extracted from a resource (material, energy, water and waste). The class seeks to establish how symbiotic networks just like in nature can be created amongst / between companies allowing the reintegration of secondary materials back into the economy. It will be illustrated through actual case studies and simulated activities how IS can improve business triple bottom line by boosting economic activities, creating new jobs and reducing negative impacts of manufacturing on the environment. The class will make attendees rethink and start to see under-utilised materials like waste as resources that are valuable.
