CURRENTLY IN HIGH SCHOOL? DO YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS?

  • Are you an aspiring designer?
  • Are you interested in the field of design but do not have any knowledge about it?
  • Not quite sure what you want to do post matric?
  • Unsure about what field of design you want to go into?
  • You have no idea what design is?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then DON’T HESITATE! Join us at the ODA Family Makers Weekend on 19 – 20 October! It’s a brilliant opportunity for you to get some answers and to spend a fun weekend with us while at the same time learning about the different Design Departments and what they offer at CPUT  to help you set up a bright and creative future FOR YOU! AND IT’S FREE!

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • We will be hosting a series of four workshops per day. So if you miss the one you can always come back the next day.
  • Each one will concentrate on a different facet of design.
  • Workshops are 90mins long.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

  • You need to be in Grade 8 – 12 to attend.
  • You do not need design as a subject at school and the workshops are absolutely FREE!

SIGN UP FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING WORKSHOPS BELOW (you are allowed to attend more than one, but please ensure that you register for them as seats are limited to 20 people per workshop)

Saturday 19th October

    • 9:00 Fashion Design: Draping Demonstrations
      • The purpose of this workshop is to make the idea of creating fashion a real experience by letting participants create their own small scale looks on quarter scale mannequins. This will range from soft fluid draping to a structured draping of a basic bodice. You will also be exposed to the design process and we will demonstrate how different fabrics (woven/knits and soft/rigid) react when draping.
    • 11:00 Product Design: Illustration Workshop
      • Come and learn about the basics of using mark making and sketching to convey concepts and ideas quicker and more clearly. You will be introduced to emotive lines and speed forms as drawing techniques to help document and communicate ideas. You do not need to know how to sketch!
    •  13:00 Visual Communications: Design for Change
      • We will demonstrate how Visual Communication Design can be used for good, in this case to create awareness about the Climate change crisis. You will be invited to write up your slogan on a placard to stand about Climate Change. We will then take your photograph which will be turned into a digital poster and will be shown on FaceBook and Instragram for a wider reach social media campaign. The poster will also be posted to Instagram and Facebook accounts where it can be tagged, sent to friends etc. This will ensure a wide social media reach for the campaign.
    •  15:00 Jewellery Design Wire Name Brooch
      • Let us introduce to the concept of Jewellery design by demonstrating how to bend a wire with different shape pliers. We will take you through the drawing process and then help you figure out to bend the wire to spell your name. You will then be given a piece of brass wire to bend and file into a brooch.
