COST OF TATTOO? WHAT HAPPENS TO MY DONATION?
Participants are asked to contribute what they can afford. The money will be donated to the Human Rights Tattoo Foundation, which uses the money to help fund more HRT events in communities around the world that are not resourced to host their own event. Your donation will contribute to the accessibility of this global Human Rights project so that the final artwork represents people from around the world and from all walks of life.
Human Rights Tattoo is tattooing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 6773 people around the world. One character – one person.
This Declaration, starting with ‘All human beings are born free and equal’ defines the moral principles of being human in 30 articles, containing 6773 letters. Together this tattooed community will carry this Declaration through-out their lives, for a lifetime. The tattoo is not only a self-reminder, this community spreads these words by talking about their tattoo. Human Rights Tattoo (HRT) has grown into an amazing community of so far 3782 participants, from 67 different countries. This group is united on its website where every person and every tattoo is documented by a photo of the tattooed letter, a name and a motivation in text. Currently you are able to read the first 20 articles in tattoos. HRT received critical acclaim internationally by magazines such as Huffington Post, Dazed and major TV stations.
The impact of this project is growing with its numbers. We have just past the halfway number of tattoos, still almost 3000 letters to go. The community is an amazing mixture of people, young and old, from the slums of Nairobi to the streets of Manhattan, activists, lawyers, politicians and CEOs. We get requests to join from all over the world, every day.
Human Rights Tattoo was started in 2012 by Dutch social artist Sander van Bussel;
“I felt I needed to use my ideas and talent in the best possible way, to use art as a spark for social change”. Instantly Human Rights Tattoo became a bundling of talents; tattoo artists, festivals and museums, translators and volunteers; they all contribute their talent and time. The tattoos are on a ‘Pay What You Want’ basis, to make it accessible for everyone, everywhere.
The Wall of Rights: a wall that unites instead of divides.
The Wall of Rights shows the 3021 human rights tattoos on one side, and 32 portraits on the other side. A double-sided wall of 32 meter, to be seen in public space. The wall wants to reflect the universal nature of human rights, universal in its thousands of skin tones, in old and younger skin, spread around the world, but united and seen in this vast artwork. The tattooed letters spell the first 20 articles and can be read in lines of 32 meter from left to right. The other side of the wall shows 32 portraits of tattoo-members including a short quote or statement of each. These portraits show 32 individuals within a universal group, hopeful and vulnerable. Their motivations and quotes shown are very personal and yet very universal at the same time.
HRT EVENT AT OPEN DESIGN AFRIKA FESTIVAL 2020!
During Open Design Afrika 2020 you can look forward to experiencing the installation of the 32m long Human Rights Tattoo Wall that includes the thousands of tattoos completed around the world to help write the Declaration of Human Rights, one tattoo at a time. The tattoos done in Cape Town during Open Design Afrika Festival 2019 will be a part of this wall, taking their place as part of the writing of the Declaration of Human Rights. In 2020, Open Design Afrika Festival will host two more tattoo events, in collaboration with the HRT team, to help complete this significant artwork. Join us this year and next and be a part of this unique, global initiative!
