The Open Design Afrika Festival has grown from strength to strength since our first event in 2013. This has been in large part due to the support of our sponsors and partners whose generosity and commitment have helped to grow the Open Design community of change agents.  As the host city and home of Open Design Afrika, Cape Town is in a unique position to take design-led innovation forward owing to its numerous design-related designations i.e. World Design Capital 2014 (WDC2014) and UNESCO City of Design (a first in Afrika) as well as playing host to many other international events.

More about Cape Town:

Cape Town is one of the oldest port cities in Africa and has a dynamic and complex history – coupled with its natural beauty has inspired a diverse and creative population.

Cape Town was designed by the social engineering of colonialism and apartheid that valued isolation and separation. These legacies still impact our current reality.

As the first UNESCO City of Design, we recognise that creativity and culture are critical components in shaping Cape Town as a thriving and resilient city. Since the start of our democracy in 1994, Cape Town has used design to help rebuild, reconnect and reposition the city to transform lives and build a better, more resilient city for all.
