Building the next design generation

The Open Design Festival is a platform for showcasing ideas, sharing experiences and building relationships. This week we’re focusing on events that support the innovation and creativity of the next generation of designers and change-makers.


Here are some highlights:









Design Garage
80 Roeland Street
17 August Time 18:00-21:00  |  Free entry The Design Garage is the newest kid on the emerging designer’s block, showcasing and exhibiting work from young designers. It launches on 17 August and you’ll be able to buy products on the night.


Design Entourage
Solomon Tshuku Street, Site-C, Khayelitsha
20 August Time 12:00-18:00  |  Free entry Unearth raw talent with Design Entourage. See, feel and buy clothing, accessories, shoes, printing and photographs by new and exciting local designers.









Dine with Khayelitsha
Meet at Central Library, Darling Street, to be collected and transported to various venues in Khayelitsha
19 August Time 18:30 – 22:15  |  R200 pp Make new friends over delicious home-cooked food and build relationships with new communities with the Dine with Khayelitsha team.








Innovate the Cape
Design Education Wing
1st floor, Cape Town City Hall
20 August Time 10:00 – 17:00  |  Free entry Meet the innovators of the future as they develop their winning ideas that will address local socio-economic challenges in the Innovate the Cape workshop.







CCDI Product Support Tour
2nd floor Harrington House, Barrack Street

Idea to Product Lab

Catch the Sounds of the Culture Beat
13 Park Green
Summergreens, Milnerton
12 – 13 August Time 12:00 – 14:30  Talking culture, change, peace and knowledge in poetry and music with Lab Base and Astromechanix


Black Filmmakers Festival
Open Design Events Space 2nd floor, Cape Town City Hall
14 August Time: 15:00 – 17:00  |  Students R25  |  Public R45 Watch and discuss productions by emerging filmmakers and performers at the Black Filmmakers Festival, which is part of the Open Design Movie Programme.
